He was born in Rochford, Essex on 22 April 1971.
He attended Greensward School in Essex.
He joined Southend United as an associated schoolboy in April 1987. He became an apprentice with them on 20 July 1987 and a professional with them on 22 May 1989. He played in 156 League and Cup matches for them, scoring 4 goals, before joining City. He lived at Hullbridge, Essex.

He signed for Norwich City from Southend United on 17 June 1993. The original fee was £200,000 with additional payments due of £100,000 after 20 first team appearances, £100,000 after another 20 appearances, £100,000 if City were to win the Championship during his contract and he played at least half of the matches, and £150,000 for an appearance for England.

He was awarded the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy for being voted City’s ‘player of the season’ for 1995/96 by the club’s supporters. He declined a new contract with City after the expiry of his existing contract in June 1996 and continued with City on a weekly contract.
Won the League Cup with Leicester City
On 15 August 1996 he was transferred from Norwich City to Leicester City for £600,000. He was in their team that won the League Cup. He played in 78 League and Cup matches for them, without scoring. They transferred him to Derby County for a reported fee of £700,000 on 21 August 1998 and he played in 63 League and Cup matches for them, scoring once.
On 23 March 2000 he was transferred to Manchester City for a reported fee of £500,000. He played in 37 League and Cup matches for them, scoring 4 goals. On 3 July 2001 they transferred him to Cardiff City for a reported fee of £650,000. His contract with Cardiff was not renewed at the end of 2003/04. He had played in 96 League and Cup matches for them, scoring 2 goals.
In July 2004 he was given a trial by Colchester United. He rejoined Southend United in August 2004 after a trial with them. He was in their team that won promotion from Division Two in the playoff Final at the Millennium Stadium in 2004/05. He remained with them until he ended his playing career in the summer of 2007. He had played in another 89 League and Cup matches for them, scoring 2 goals.
Emigrated to Australia
He and his family then emigrated to Australia. In 2007 and 2008 he was head coach at Mosman Football Club. He also worked as a match analyst for Fox Sports and coached at Sydney Grammar School. Early in December 2008 he signed for Manly United in the New South Wales Premier League as a player and assistant coach. Later in December 2008 he began playing for Newcastle United Jets.
On 1 January 2011 he became an assistant coach to the Australian women’s national team. From 2012 he managed the Australian Ladies’ under20 team. In August 2013 he became the technical director of the Tasmanian Football Federation. He continued in the job for 2 years and then coached in schools and for a club in Sydney.
In May 2016 he became manager of the Thailand Women’s team. In July 2019 he became technical manager of Port, a club in Thailand. In September 2020 the Australian club APIA Leichardt announced that he had been appointed as head coach of their women’s team. In November 2022 he became coach of the Papua New Guinea Women’s team. In 2024 he was appointed head coach of New South Wales Under-16 Boys team.
In November 2024 his daughter Natasha received her first call up to the Australian national team.
