He was born in Bishop’s Stortford on 22 September 1964.
He played for Harlow District Boys, and also had a trial for the Essex county rugby team.
Apprentice at Spurs
He played for Hoddesdon United before joining Tottenham Hotspur as an apprentice in May 1981. He became a professional with them on 24 September 1982. He played in 2 League matches for Tottenham Hotspur, with no Cup appearances. He was an unused substitute for them in the Union of European Football Associations Cup Final in 1984 when they beat Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht.
In 1982 he played in 1 match for England Under17 and in 6 matches for England Under18.
Signed for Norwich City
He signed for Norwich City from Tottenham Hotspur on 7 October 1985 for a reported fee of £50,000.

He was awarded the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy for being voted City’s ‘player of the season’ for 1990/91 by the club’s supporters.
He made 369 first team appearances scoring 2 goals and he was part of team that played in the UEFA Cup in 1993/94; the Canaries first and only ever season of European competition.
His solitary league goal was against Everton in the Premier League in the 1993/94 season. At the time, Everton were managed by former City boss Mike Walker.

Joined Swindon Town
On 8 December 1994 he joined Swindon Town on a 1 month loan from City.
The ‘Eastern Daily Press’ of 24 December 1994 reported that he was to be transferred from Norwich City to Swindon. It was agreed that the fee would be decided by a Football League tribunal. The tribunal sat on 25 January 1995 and decided that Swindon Town should pay City £250,000, with an additional 20% of any subsequent profit that Swindon might make on selling the player also due to City.
He had played in 117 League and Cup matches for Swindon Town, without scoring, when in March 1998 they gave him a free transfer. He had been suffering from an ankle injury.
The ‘Eastern Daily Press’ of 5 August 1998 said he was being given a trial by Stevenage Borough. He was not taken on by them.
He was given subsequently a trial by Kingstonian and joined them in time for their first league match of the season.
Began coaching at Brighton
However, on 19 August 1998 he joined Brighton and Hove Albion on a short term contract. He was given a longer contract by them on 18 November 1998 and played in 39 League and Cup matches, without scoring. While with them he began coaching their youth team and on 4 July 2000 he became their reserve team manager and ended his playing career.
He became youth team coach at Barnet in August 2000 and became their first team coach in August 2001.
In January 2002 he was appointed as manager of the under 19 team at Leyton Orient. Later he became their assistant manager before leaving at the end of the 2004/05 season.
In July 2005 he was appointed as youth team coach at Wycombe Wanderers. In the summer of 2007 he was appointed as their first team coach, and in May 2008 as their assistant manager.
On 10 October 2008 it was announced that he had been appointed as assistant manager to Paul Lambert at Colchester United.
Assistant Manager at Norwich City
On 20 August 2009 Norwich City announced that he had been appointed as assistant manager to Paul Lambert. On 5 July 2012 Norwich City announced that he had left the club by mutual consent with immediate effect. On the same day Aston Villa announced his appointment as assistant manager to Paul Lambert. He left Aston Villa in May 2014.
Dagenham and Redbridge announced on 22 January 2016 that he had joined them as a coach.
King’s Lynn
On 22 February 2017 he was appointed as manager of King’s Lynn Town. At the end of that season they won the Norfolk Senior Cup in the Final at Carrow Road. On 22 April 2018 he announced that he was to leave the club at the end of the season.
On 30 May 2018 he was appointed as manager of Grantham Town. On 17 October 2018 the club announced his resignation.
King’s Lynn Town announced on 1 November 2018 that he had been reappointed as their manager. Under his management they were promoted to the National League North in the 2018/19 playoff Final and were promoted to the Vanarama National League in 2019/20 on a points-per-games basis after the season was abandoned because of the pandemic. On 29 November 2021 King’s Lynn Town announced that he was leaving them by mutual agreement.
On 23 January 2022 Kettering Town announced that he had been appointed as their manager. On 15 May 2022 Kettering announced that he had left the club.
On 6 September 2022 Boston United announced that he had been appointed as their manager. He left Boston United in October 2024.
In November 2024 he joined St Albans City as their manager.
Then in October 2025 he re-joined King’s Lynn Town for a third time but has since left them.
