Duncan’s shirt unveiled at Carrow Road

Today, the Trustees of The Norwich City Football Club Historical Trust hosted a very special event at Carrow Road to unveil the red shirt worn by club captain Duncan Forbes at Watford on 29 April 1972.

This match, watched by a crowd of 22,421, will forever be remembered as the day City won their first ever Division Two title with the point gained from the 1-1 draw. Promotion to Division One had been achieved in the previous game with a 2-1 win at Orient on 24 April 1972.

At the end of the game, the crowd invaded the Watford pitch and the City players then appeared in the Director’s Box to celebrate in front of their supporters. Some players, including Duncan Forbes, tossed their shirts into the crowd.

Duncan’s shirt was caught and then given to an 8 year old Glenn Stuart who was attending his first ever away game. Glenn has now kindly given the shirt to the Trust so that it could be preserved and displayed for others to enjoy.

To achieve this, the Trust has arranged for the shirt to be professionally framed and presented on the stairway that leads up to the Directors Box on the 1st floor of the City stand at Carrow Road.

Today’s event was attended by a number of guests including Glenn as well as Dave Stringer and Clive Payne; two members of the 1971/72 title winning squad. Dave and Clive discussed their experiences of playing for the Canaries in that historic season. Glenn recalled his own memories of the campaign as well as the story of how he acquired the shirt. Glenn, Dave and Clive then formally unveiled the iconic red number 5 shirt.

The shirt, which was originally made by Umbro, now proudly sits at Carrow Road and The Trust hopes it will be enjoyed by many visitors.
